Chapter Six

Valentino’s turned out to be a restaurant with an elegant atmosphere and Italian cuisine.

“I thought we were going to a bar!” Eddie said, suddenly feeling very underdressed in his jeans and polo shirt.

“We are. The bar is downstairs and it’s much less formal. Come on! Follow me unless you’d rather stick to cafeteria food.”

With a taunting smile, Ronnie sauntered down the flight of steps into a dimly lit bar, filled with soft jazz and the enticing smell of fine liquor. Eddie couldn’t help but admire the way her soft hips swayed as she walked, and he had to subtly shift his jeans as his sudden arousal became painfully uncomfortable in the confines of the tight denim.

She led him to her favorite table in a quiet corner, and they each ordered scotch on the rocks from the waitress.

“So, I’ve been dying to know.” Ronnie said without preamble. “What’s a guy like you, who’s obviously never had to work a day in his life, doing looking for a starting position in a factory?”

“What do you mean?” Eddie choked on is drink, unprepared for the sudden interrogation.

“When you first came into my office in your brand new designer clothes, with your manicured fingernails and Ivy League swagger, I thought you wouldn’t last a day. I figured one of your high society buddies had dared you to do it, or you were trying to prove something to your old man. You surprised me, however; you really toughed it out. I saw those sores on your hands and I know those damn boots must have been killing your feet. Still, you came in every morning and worked your ass off for eight hours every day. You even worked through your lunch break that Wednesday when the conveyer belt got jammed and you helped Alejandro fix it. No one goes through that much pain and aggravation just to win some dare or satisfy some petty argument. No, that kind of dedication has a deeper purpose. So, what is it? What’s the reason you’re doing all this?”

Eddie didn’t know what to say. He realized that he should have come up with a backstory for himself and his brain worked quickly to come up with a convincing lie. As his imagination spun, he looked up from his drink into Ronnie’s eyes. They were beautiful; mesmerizing and intoxicating. She looked at him with such sincerity and empathy that he realized she really wanted to know him as person. She wasn’t seeking gossip born of idle curiosity. She was reaching out to him as one human being to another, and Eddie found he just couldn’t lie to her. He needed to tell her, if not the whole truth, at least some part of it.

“Well, you’re right about me. You nailed it on that first day. I am a spoiled, lazy, entitled playboy. I’ve always had the world handed to me on a platinum tray and never appreciated what it took to get it there. I never knew what hard work was or what it took to earn a dollar.
